I am a campus recruiter, so I use the Talent Engagement Suite to create segments and campaigns to attract and source top talent for our entry-level roles & internship positions. While I am out on campus during our busy season, I can easily connect & engage with the best students at big career fairs. However, there are several other schools that have the exact kind of student we are looking to hire, and I can't always engage at every university during a busy recruiting season. The Talent Engagement products help me to passively source new students at different schools to reach a broader audience than I could manage on my own. It saves me time and helps me find the best students- win win!

For roles that require a lot of applicant flow, or for positions that require a large cohort of hires at one time, these features are perfect.

I use the Handshake Talent Engagement Suite to recruit university level talent. I use it source candidates, post jobs, manage and seek out events, and send campaign messages to many students at once.
  • Campaign messaging functionality is very good.

We use Handshake to advertise our university jobs and events to a diverse set of students. The ability to run campaigns allows us to first post jobs and events and then run campaigns to target specific students to encourage them to apply to our posted jobs or attend our posted events.

Handshake is well suites to times when you want to drive a larger (and/or more diverse) pool to your job postings and events. You can send out a campaign to target the types of students you want to target and these campaigns have been proven to increase the engagement with our events and jobs. For example, before hosting an in-person campus event, I run a campaign to invite relevant students at that school to my event and I've seen an increase in event attendance. Handshake is not the tool, however, for looking through and contacting individual candidates as there is no way to look through individual profiles - you have to run a campaign first for a general job or posting and then individuals can respond to your outreach and that is when you are able to view their individual profile and contact them.

I work specifically in University Talent Recruiting so Handshake Talent Engagement Suite has been a great help in targeting the right audience. It can be hard getting the right demographic to apply using other job boards such as Indeed, so we are grateful to have a platform that is just for students and recent graduates. I have been able to source hundreds and hundreds of top talent candidates to fill out roles which would not have been possible without Handshake Talent Engagement Suite.
  • Being able to track who views a role, and being able to contact them if they didn't formally apply
  • The ability to properly label candidates who show interest in our roles, candidates we have reached out to, and candidates who are not interested in our roles. This helps us even more with targeting the right audience.
  • Being able to see all the students who are sent messages in a campaign, that way we can mark them as contacted for certain roles.
  • The ability to share a mailbox or delegate messages to other users.
  • The ability to see the job listing as students see it would be helpful as well.
  • Messages notification seems to be stuck on 13 whether I have more or less unread messages in my inbox.
  • A way to label private profiles that receive messages from us or view our jobs.
  • It would be nice to have a map that shows where the schools are located in the country. Sometimes we want to send out campaigns to schools in a certain region and it can be time consuming researching where all the universities are. Maybe even pre-made school lists by region.
  • It would be nice to have the ability to label candidates individually or in bulk from my inbox - similar to labeling applicants in the job listings.
Handshake Talent Engagement Suite is great for recruiters who sole purpose is to fill internships and entry level roles. Having a platform is made for the demographics we look for helps us weed out a lot of candidates who apply who are not a fit for these early career type roles.

I use Handshake Talent Engagement Suite for mainly two purposes: 1. College recruiting - I register my company for college fairs. Then I make a segment (a select group of students) who I send a campaign (message) to announce that we are attending the college fair so that they will come visit us at our booth. Its a way that I can funnel more students to my colleagues when they are attending a fair. 2. Salaried and hourly roles - when the position that we are recruiting for can accept a new grad or recent grad, then I can post positions on Handshake Talent Engagement Suite and send campaigns out based by major/background. I do this to better advertise a role and I funnel those candidates to the job posting on our corporate website. I do this for myself and other recruiters that do not have Handshake Talent Engagement Suite access.
  • allows me to target specific majors and message them
  • allows me to target specific graduation years and message them
  • allows me to message an audience without a particular university affiliation and message them
  • add an "occupational health and safety" major
  • add an easier to read calendar so i can see all of the events we are attending company wide
  • allow us to save different company descriptions - CRH doesn't have any traction with career fairs. Ash Grove Cement does, so I find I am always having to delete the CRH description and put in the Ash Grove one.
Excellent for:

Roles where the person just needs to have 1-2 years of experience plus a degree

Most of our organization's recruitment is focused on current college students and recent graduates. In our empathy testing with this audience, we repeatedly heard that Handshake was the platform they knew and trusted for job search purposes. While our organization was familiar with the "free" level of Handshake account access, it became clear that the Handshake Premium offerings would benefit all our recruiters directly. We have leveraged the platform to directly connect with our target audiences, personally inviting them to various events where attendees are introduced to our mission and opportunities. We are exceeding many of our lead generation goals thus far this fiscal year due largely to our usage of the Handshake Talent Engagement Suite.
  • Connects us with our target audience (current college students and recent graduates).
  • Connects us with a variety of career services offices, building trust in our organization.
  • It provides capacity to our recruiters while also allowing us to balance volume and personalization in recruitment.
  • Developing an integration between Handshake and Salesforce would alleviate the majority of our capacity concerns with the platform.
  • Easier ability to track who was sourced from a specific message campaign (on the campaign section of the site rather than the "candidates" section.

Our company has very large early career hiring needs nationwide with only a handful of recruiters to manage events, candidate inflow, etc. We utilize Handshake in an effort to reach as many students as possible. Handshake allows us to be strategic in how we use it: getting more traction at our events via campaigns for career fairs, creating segments for candidates interested in hard-to-sell markets, direct messaging students who meet our qualifications at schools we are connected with but won't be able to hit physically on-campus. Overall, Handshake has allowed for us to offer more solutions to our internal clients and creative ways to dig into a larger, diverse applicant pool.
  • Scheduled campaigns look like direct messages and are customizable to tie to specific events & jobs - we've had great success in responses!
  • The job postings we are able to create are easy to read, can encompass all of our locations, and lead candidates directly back to our website to officially apply.
  • The company profile is robust and allows us to include testimonials, news articles, etc. and really earn candidates' trust as they are scrolling through.
  • The fact that schools can have us register for events and fairs in Handshake as well as send updates through that, makes it so much easier to have everything in one place!
  • I've found it's hard to narrow down segments to get specific. For example, there is no "structural" engineering or "geotechnical" engineering major selection so just going off what students may or may not put on their profiles doesn't pull great results. The location preference option is also great but has caused issues for us because it pulls from locations that students apply to (even if the job had more than one listed), so they don't necessarily note it on their profile or actually want every place the system pulls.
  • The inbox feature is great for replies, but hard to come back to any that are already opened. I receive dozens of messages at a time and a tick of the system that can be irritating is that each time I reply to an individual message, it takes me back to the top of my inbox and shows my reply as unread.
  • I think the tagging could be beefed up to allow campaigns/messages to filter out or in people that have certain tags (or just unselect people in general). We've on several occasions accidentally messaged candidates we didn't want to because we can't see who is included in the bulk list.
  • It'd be really nice to be able to just search candidates by name, school, degree, etc. in the system without having to make a segment too!
Handshake is a great platform to reach large amounts of candidates in varying locations on an individual level. It is a sort of one-stop-shop for early careers recruitment since you can register for events & career fairs through the system as well.

It is harder to use Handshake when you're looking for very specialized or niche candidate profiles.

At my school, I used Handshake for many years. The two main ways I used it were to browse for job openings geared toward college students and to sign up and browse events at my school. The business problem the product solves is how to conveniently host all the events and jobs that students might want to look at in one place. The scope of my use case is just for me as a user.

  • Application tracking is often buggy or missing.
  • Notification preferences are limited.
  • Lots of spam messages.
I think Handshake is really good for large organizations looking to host online events and easily organize a large number of students. It is able to handle large amounts of people/companies and scales well. One use case where I think it is less valuable is for educational institutes, which are primarily looking for job aggregation and matching. I found that the filtering, matching, and other job application features were generally lacking when compared to products that focus just on that, such as indeed or LinkedIn.

Our organization was initially in need of a tool to help organize and promote virtual and on-campus events. As an enterprise organization, we also needed to improve our brand presence and overall awareness of our company at universities. Handshake was the perfect platform to help us work with colleges & universities to better communicate opportunities to connect with Magna. Once we were able to get our events running, we were able to quickly expand to centralizing our external corporate presence, consolidating our recruiters under one account, improving employer brand and awareness, and getting large-scale campaigns for events and career opportunities activated.

We primarily utilize Handshake Talent Engagement Suite for our summer internship recruiting, but have also used it to increase brand awareness through hosting events and attending career fairs. This has helped us target specific audiences focused on certain skillsets and diverse groups for roles that are difficult to fill or are traditionally less diverse. We have also been able to connect with over 1,300 schools, many of which we never would have gotten in contact with had it not been for Handshake Talent Engagement Suite.

  • Customizable campaign messaging that allows you to reach a wide variety of students
  • I would love if there were a better way to filter by experience. Currently, it's based on graduation date but a lot of my talent segments pick up people with 10+ years of experience that recently started or completed another degree. This is frustrating for the candidate who receives a bunch of misplaced messages and for recruiters who have to explain why they received a message about an internship they are clearly overqualified for. Can we separate grad year from years of experience in the segmentation somehow?
  • I wish there were an easier way to "blacklist" candidates who were rude or expressed a sentiment of never wanting to hear from me or my company again. These are people that I don't want to accidentally include in a campaign message 6 months later.
It is very well-suited for internship or early-in-career hiring/raising brand awareness. While it may not be the primary focus, there is certainly room for improvement to become more friendly to experienced professionals as well.

My team uses Handshake to source candidates and to promote events and jobs. We use Handshake on a daily basis to fill roles in our early career programs. We are very focused on recruiting women in tech and military candidates. When sending campaigns for jobs and events, we use the underrepresented groups categories to target these groups.

The only resumes Handshake has matched with our company are not even close to meeting our educational requirements, or they are 2 or more years old. We offer good jobs for students and new grads but have not had any matches through this website. Applicants are either in a different profession or posted their resumes in 2019 or 2020.
  • Lead you to believe they actually try to find staff who are a good match.
  • They can improve on communication with employers other than trying to upsell.
We have tried to use Handshake for several years with absolutely no success. We also wonder if job seekers are being properly coached regarding writing a cover letter, sending a message to potential employers, or even bothering to research the company in which they show interest. There seems to be a complete lack of instruction or initiative in these areas.

We actively use this product for the recruitment of college students. It allows me to post a job across multiple college job boards and allows students to apply. This is for internal hiring but our external recruiters also use it since they do a lot of work with recent college graduates.
  • Allows you to reach multiple colleges with one click.
  • Good visibility for college students.
  • Can send follow-up messages to college contacts.
  • From an employer perspective, it is very difficult to navigate and just has a horrible interface.
  • I can send messages but can't tell if they're received or seen. For instance, if a college declines to post a job and I ask why, I usually just hear no reply. I'm not sure why but maybe they don't see it?
  • When I receive an application, it doesn't tell me what school it's from so if I have a job posted to twenty colleges, I have to scroll them all, find it, make sure it's not a duplicate, and then review. It's tedious.
  • There are multiple users in my company who set up the account and used their local office information as opposed to HQ information and I'm unable to change it.
It's well suited when you are looking for students that are either recent college graduates or seniors getting ready to graduate and looking for that first job. You need to keep this in mind as you won't find the experience that you're looking for but could find some really strong students looking to make an impact.
